National Latino Peace Officers
Carlos Ledesma was born on December 23, 1975, in Fresno, California. As a student, he loved sports. He played football and baseball and was an avid and accomplished wrestler. He also enjoyed music and played clarinet in his high school marching band.
After graduation, Carlos joined the United States Marine Corps in 1994 and served as an infantry rifleman, fire team leader, and squad leader, ultimately rising to the rank of Sergeant. He was a highly decorated Iraq War veteran.
Following his discharge from the Marines, Carlos moved to Iowa where he trained and served as a police officer for three years before moving to Arizona and joining the Chandler Police Department in 2007.
Officer Ledesma’s hard work and dedication in patrol led quickly to his selection as a Detective with the Narcotics Unit and as a Tactical Operator with the Special Assignment Unit.
On July 28, 2010, while serving undercover during a narcotics operation, Carlos and two fellow detectives were shot. His two co-workers were wounded but were able to return fire.
Detective Ledesma died in the line of duty.
Those who knew Carlos admired him for his love of life, his dedication to family, and his genuine desire to give his all, whatever the objective. He had a contagious laugh and a smile that would melt the heart.He is survived by his wife Sherry, his sons Luciano and Elijio, his parents Rey and Dora, his sister Trina, and his extended law enforcement family at the Chandler Police Department.
